An Open Letter returning an invitation to the Valencia Biennial 2003

--Barbaric war and occupation in Iraq by the coalition is protested--

The art and performance collaborative known as Praxis (Delia Bajo and Brainard Carey) have returned their invitation to participate in the Valencia Biennial.

This Spanish and American husband and wife team have returned the biennial invitation to protest the current occupation and war in Iraq by the coalition that includes Spain and the United States. Delia Bajo is a native of Madrid, Spain while Brainard Carey is from Manhattan.

Their statement: While we are grateful to be invited to the Valencia Biennial by William Alsop of Alsop Architects, we must in all due respect not accept the invitation. At a time in the world when a so-called "coalition" including Spain and the United States team up to launch an obscene war and occupation in Iraq, we cannot remain silent in the International context of the Valencia Biennial. There is nothing more callous and shortsighted than the aggressive war in Iraq resulting in the loss of innocent lives and homes and the looting and destruction of museums. As a Spaniard and an American we are profoundly embarrassed by our respective countries and their act of war upon Iraq which continues to be absurd ­as the motive for the war has still to be proved since no chemical weapons of mass destruction have been found! We are saddened that we live amongst governmental barbarians. As artists, we cannot in good conscience continue our work without drawing attention to the irony and blindness of this war and occupation.

Protesta contra la guerra barbarica y la ocupación en Iraq por los paises de la coalición.

El colectivo de arte y performance conocido como Praxis (Delia Bajo y Brainard Carey) ha rechazado la invitación de participar en la Bienal de Valencia que sera inagurada el 6 de Junio. Este equipo de una española y un americano (marido y mujer) ha rechazado la invitación como acto de protesta contra la ocupación y la guerra en Iraq por la coalición que incluye España y los Estados Unidos. Delia Bajo es española nacida en Madrid, y Brainard Carey es americano, nacido en la ciudad de Nueva York.

Su declaración: Al mismo tiempo que agradecemos a William Alsop de la firma Alsop Architects su invitacion a La Bienal de Valencia, con todo el respeto y en conciencia NO PODEMOS ACEPTARLA. En un momento en el que en el mundo se ha formado una supuesta "coalición" que incluye España y los Estados unidos, que ha lanzado una guerra obscena y la ocupación de Iraq, nosotros no podemos permanecer en silencio en el contexto internacional de la Bienal de Valencia. No hay nada más ciego y sin escrupulos que la agresion producida por la guerra contra Iraq que ha dado como resultado la pérdida de vidas inocentes y hogares, asi como el saqueo y destrucción de museos. Como española y americano nos sentimos profundamente avergonzados de nuestros respectivos paises y de su acto de guerra contra Iraq que continua siendo absurdo ya que el motivo para la Guerra esta sin probar, todavia no se han encontrado ningun arma química de destrucción de masas. Nos sentimos tristes de vivir entre bárbaros gubernamentales. Como artistas, no podemos en conciencia continuar nuestro trabajo sin enfocar la atención sobre la ironía y la ceguera de esta guerra y ocupación.
